Summary
Minecraft accounts made past a specific date are likely still active as legacy or Mojang accounts. After Microsoft acquired Minecraft, all previous Mojang accounts were required to be migrated into Microsoft accounts. Fortunately, the migration is quickly done through the official Minecraft website.

How to Switch a Mojang Account to a Microsoft Account
1. Log in to minecraft.net with the Mojang account.
2. Navigate to the Profile tab.
3. Choose the Move My Account button, then click Get Code to verify the email.
4. Enter the code in the box shown, then click Submit and Start Migration.
5. Log in to an existing Microsoft account or choose Create Account to make a new one.
6. After logging in to the account, choose Complete Move.
7. A popup will show saying Move Complete, The Mojang account will now be migrated to the Microsoft account.
