What Is the Minecraft Movie Rated?

Posted on by amber
Minecraft contains no shortage of scary entities, including zombies and skeletons, which has left some parents rightfully concerned that the Minecraft movie is not suitable for young children. So, today, we review official ratings from both the US and UK and provide our personal take while answering the question, “What is the Minecraft Movie Rated?”

What Is the Minecraft Movie Rated?

MPA PG Rating Logo Both the Motion Picture Association and the British Board of Film Classifications have rated “A Minecraft Movie” PG for Parental Guidance. The specific reasoning for these decisions was that the film contained mild violence, some language that may not be suitable for children, occasions of scary imagery, and suggestive/rude humor. Using the Motion Picture Association’s scale to put this rating into context, it falls between “G” and “PG-13.”

As of the writing of this article, the film has not yet been released to the general public. However, the trailers suggest that A Minecraft Movie intends to cater to younger audiences. The scary entities, such as zombies and skeletons, have been given cube-like proportions that are in line with their in-game appearances and show no gore. “Death,” as partially depicted in one trailer for a chicken, also seems to be in line with how the game depicts it. A poof of smoke as the entity falls over and vanishes, leaving an item behind. There is additionally a scene of two pandas with hearts above their heads and a baby appearing out of thin air next to them, referencing how animal breeding works in-game. As for language, one trailer depicts a main character humorously saying, “What the hell?” in response to seeing a silly pink sheep. Because the movie is rated PG rather than PG-13, we can likely expect that to be the worst of it. However, that is ultimately an assumption on our part based on other trailers not showing anything as close to that level. Overall, as the PG rating suggests, it is up to parents to decide if what we described crossed any lines. But, if asked for our opinion, we would say the film is suitable for children nine and up, in line with the rating given by the Netherlands.
