Safety, accessibility, crafting, and storing resources – these are among the many aspects that make bases essential in Valheim. The right base location is ideal for survival and progression, allowing players to enjoy the game to its fullest. So, keep reading as we highlight each biome in Valheim and why you might decide to build your base there.
Valheim Base Building Guide: Which Biome Should You Choose?
The best base locations in Valheim mentioned below consider various factors, such as safety and practicality. However, these places shouldn’t deter a player’s preferred location for their base. Nonetheless, these suggestions can help you set up headquarters that can help enhance overall gameplay.Meadows
The meadows biome is where each adventure begins in Valheim. Despite the lack of mid- and late-game resources, many areas in this biome can be great base locations. One notable location is the area near the boss stones. Touted as one of the best base locations in Valheim, this place offers a strategic advantage for early-, mid-, and even late-game moments. Here, players can easily swap their forsaken powers. Additionally, this biome allows the growing of various plants, particularly carrots, turnips, and onions. This place is also a relatively serene and safe space since it’s less likely for a troll or Desquito to randomly attack the base, making for a nice, peaceful place to call home. Also, Hildr isn’t far from this location. Interacting with this NPC allows players to purchase various items, including different clothing and styling options.Black Forest
Moving from the early game to mid-game may take you to the Black Forest. Although tall trees cover this biome, some locations are still ideal for base constructions. A good place for a base is near copper and tin deposits. That way, you can easily gather the materials needed for your Smithy without searching far and wide. Although such a location is ideal for farming resources, the Black Forest is a biome filled with many dangers. One minute, you're crafting weapons on your Smithy, and the next second, you're trying to defend yourself from a wandering troll. As for farming crops, this biome is also good for cultivating different plants, specifically carrots, turnips, and onions. Players can also farm Greydwarfs in the Black Forest, and they can do so automatically. Complete this goal by searching for a Greydwarf den and surrounding it with fences. Then, let your tamed wolves enter the area for an unlimited supply of XP and Greydwarf resources. While Hildr is near the Meadows, you can find Haldor in the Black Forest. Setting up a base or camp next to his trading spot can also be ideal for easy access to this NPC’s wares.Swamp
The swamp biome is home to many adventurers, but it’s also the breeding ground for leeches. Players who wish to set up bases in this region should find elevated land. Remember, leeches can still jump over moats and small puddles. Despite the constant dread of leeches and other dangers, the swamp can still be a great location for a base. Players who wish to remain hidden, especially in PVP servers, can deem the swamps to be one of the best base locations in Valheim. Note that farming is also challenging in the swamp since the only plant you can cultivate is the turnip. However, an automatic Surtling farm is also possible in this biome. Simply find a fire spout near the water. Then, wait as Surtlings spawn from the fire spout. Note that your waiting location should let the Surtlings come to you, but they should attempt to cross the water. The Surtlings will then die when they step on water, allowing you to gather the spoils.Mountains
The mountains in Valheim are cold, rough, and arguably the best views you can get in the game. Choosing one of the peaks can become ideal for certain bases, especially for players who want to relax and see the world map from above. Like building a base in the meadows, constructing one near a boss-spawning area isn’t a bad idea. Doing so allows you to farm for boss drops whenever needed.Plains
The plains biome may look like the meadows, albeit it has more challenges than its early-game counterpart. Although many areas in this biome can be deemed as the best base locations in Valheim, players must consider the frequent possibility of Desquito and Fuling attacks. A moat surrounding your base or camp can help prevent random Fuling encounters but not Desquito assaults. Apart from requiring additional base defenses, the plains are still one of the best locations for farming. Choose a relatively flat land (or terraform your own), and place farming plots. Then, cultivate various plants, namely carrots, onions, turnips, barley, and flax.Mistlands
Like the swamp, setting up bases in the Mistlands must be done on high ground. Alternatively, search for dark spots on your map, as these are mist-free areas and are less likely to be dangerous. Once you decide on a relatively safe area in the Mistlands to build a base, you can also start farming. However, only two plants can thrive in this biome: Magecaps and Jotun Puffs.Ashlands
The Ashlands is arguably the most dangerous place in Valheim at the time of writing. Danger lurks everywhere, and the environment may not seem like it’s a suitable place to set up a base. Nonetheless, a base in this region is ideal if you want easy access to the biome without needing to cross the sea every time. One of the best base locations in Valheim, particularly in the Ashlands, is the area where you first land in this biome. Remember, set up a portal as soon as possible upon building a small base. Otherwise, hostile enemies and other dangers can destroy your camp in mere moments. One way to quickly build a base in the Ashlands is by using one of the abandoned buildings near the shore. Alternatively, construct a base on top of a spike to prevent grounded enemies from attacking. Also, don’t forget to place a Shield Generator to prevent your buildings from getting destroyed by the Ashlands’ harmful environment.Get Started with a
