Terraria Flying Dutchman Boss Guide

Posted on by justin
Ever wondered what it’s like to fight Davy Jones’ legendary ship? Terraria gives you just the opportunity to try your luck! Defeat the Flying Dutchman, and you can loot the precious treasure hiding from within the ship’s hallowed halls. Fail, and you'll end up walking the plank. So, without further ado, here’s our guide on how to summon and defeat the Flying Dutchman in Terraria.

How to Summon the Flying Dutchman in Terraria

Terraria Summon Flying Dutchman Introduced in version 1.3.0.1, summoning and fighting the Flying Dutchman requires players to initiate the Pirate Invasion event. Starting this event requires using the Pirate Map item, which is a random drop from all enemies in the Ocean biome. Additionally, players must fulfill the following requirements before they can trigger the event:
  • The final pre-Hardmode boss, Wall of Flesh, has been defeated
  • Destroy at least one Altar
  • At least one player in the current world has at least 200 maximum health
You’ll know when a Pirate Invasion event will happen shortly when the message, “Pirates are approaching from the east/west!” appears on the screen. The event starts when the “The pirates have arrived!” message appears. You must then complete at least 50% of the event to summon the Flying Dutchman.

How to Beat the Flying Dutchman

Terraria Flying Dutchman As its name implies, the Flying Dutchman doesn’t require it to be on the water. Instead, it flies around the battlefield, particularly in the location of the Pirate Invasion event. Thankfully, the Flying Dutchman boss fight isn’t a multi-layered battle, unlike other bosses like the Queen Slime or the Empress of Light. Generally, you must steer clear from the ship’s ranged attacks and their lines of sight. Don’t forget that getting too close to the boss can hurt you because of contact damage as well. So, one of your best bets for this fight is to use ranged weapons or summon minions to more safely manage distance. Another option is to use a mid-range melee weapon like the Death Sickle or one of the Yoyos. It's also important to remain vigilant of the other enemies from the Terraria Pirate Invasion event, as they can quickly overwhelm you if you lose track of them. If you're struggling to keep up with the pace of this boss' damage, place Campfires and other items in the area that can help restore health and mana quickly. You can also utilize sentries if that extra bit of crowd control will be the difference. Warning: Moving too far from the battlefield will cause the Flying Dutchman to despawn - so don't lose your nerve!
Attacks
The Flying Dutchman has the following attacks:
  • Rams the player while firing its cannons
  • Summons a parrot the dive bombs the player
  • Summons a Pirate Crossbower, sniping the player with flaming arrows
  • The captain appears and fights the player

  • Coin Gun
  • Lucky Coin
  • Discount Card
  • Pirate Staff
