There are many farming and life sim games to try, yet few have come close to capturing the experience Stardew Valley so masterfully provides. However, that does not mean a contender will never arise. Today, we compare Fields of Mistria by NPC Studio to Stardew Valley by ConcernedApe, in StardewValley Vs Fields of Mistria.
Stardew Valley by ConcernedApe is a 2D farming and life simulation game created in a pixel art style. Upon the player’s arrival in Stardew Valley, they are greeted by beautiful environments, a cast of loveable characters, each with a story to tell, and a farm to call their own. Everything from there is entirely up to the player, and even after hours within the valley, there are constantly new features and secrets waiting to be found.
Stardew Valley stands at the top of the genre, and rightfully so, for more reasons than one could reasonably list. However, to try and summarize it into one sentence, it would be the perfect combination of RPG elements layered over a farming and life simulation game overflowing with so much heart and soul that opening the game can sometimes feel like going home.
Fields of Mistria by NPC Studio is a farming and life simulation game, much like Stardew Valley, but with a more anime-esque pixel art style and clear inspirations from Harvest Moon and earlier Rune Factory titles. Those diving in for the first time will find their skills needed in a small community named Mistria, ravaged by an earthquake, and only through the player’s efforts will the town be revitalized over the course of the story.
All the familiar farming and life sim features are present alongside an abundance of exciting skills, an in-depth magic system that changes up the standard farming gameplay, and beautifully written dialogue that genuinely makes the player feel like they are part of the community. We truly can not emphasize enough how well-written this game is.

Stardew Valley Vs Fields of Mistria
The first assumption often made about Fields of Mistria is that it is merely a clone of Stardew Valley, but that couldn’t be further from the case. In fact, Stardew Valley fans in Fields of Mistria’s overwhelmingly positive Steam reviews will often be the first to say it is very much its own game, worthy of plenty of praise. Instead, picking which to play will often come down to preference in certain visual, gameplay, and story elements.Visuals
Fans of more anime-esque visuals will likely enjoy the appearance of Fields of Mistria more than Stardew Valley, but that is not to suggest Stardew Valley’s visuals are lacking. In Stardew Valley, everything from the environments to the animals are filled with detail and character. A way one could put it is Fields of Mistria is more pastel and smooth while Stardew Valley is more warm and textured.Gameplay
Stardew Valley offers a generous blend of farming, life simulation, and RPG mechanics, while Fields of Mistria offers about the same but with more in-depth RPG mechanics. Some examples include combat in Fields of Mistria, which has both martial and magical options, more complicated enemies, and abilities such as jumping and swimming. There are also more skills to level up in Field of Mistria.Story
Fields of Mistria’s dialog and character interactions are where the game shines over Stardew Valley. The NPCs interact with each other, acknowledge what the player does, remember what was said to them, and have an absolutely enormous amount of dialog for just about everything going on. Combining this with Fields of Mistria’s campaign, one will find themselves quickly immersed in the story and characters. Stardew Valley is not without story, and every character has one to share, but it is more of an adventure one discovers and forges for themselves. A very different experience, but one with merits of its own, especially for those who prefer to pave their own way.Available Content
Stardew Valley is a complete game with years of free updates packed into it, including co-op with up to four players. If that were not already enough, Stardew Valley also has a very active and large modding scene with mountains of content that can easily be installed, allowing anyone to custom-tailor their experience or make the game even larger with third-party expansions. Fields of Mistria, on the other hand, is in early access and won’t see completion until 2025. This sadly means much of the game, including marriage, is not yet present as of writing.Which Should You Play?
For those looking to try a farming and life simulation game for the first time, we recommend playing Stardew Valley. It is a fantastic, if not the best, introduction to the genre packed with enjoyable content. The reasons we have listed throughout this article are just a few of the many reasons why this game is beloved by fans across the globe. For fans of RPG games, Harvest Moon, or Rune Factory, we would instead recommend Fields of Mistria despite it not yet being complete. Fields of Mistria takes the best of those two titles and makes the perfect blend that recaptures the experience many had with the farming and life simulation games from the 1990s. RPG game fans who have not played either title or Stardew Valley will likely enjoy it more than anyone else, as it will all be new. Finally, for Fans of Stardew Valley looking for a new farming and life simulation game, we can not recommend Fields of Mistria enough. The many inspirations from Stardew Valley will make the game familiar, yet its many differences will also make it fresh, especially when it comes to dialog, story, and RPG mechanics.Get Started with a
