Stardew Valley Monster Compendium Guide

Posted on by amber
One can never have enough monster loot, especially when it comes to those rarer drops deep in the mines. But how can one increase their hauls outside of dedicating more time? Today, we look at one such method in our Stardew Valley monster compendium guide.

What is the Stardew Valley Monster Compendium?

Stardew Valley Bookseller Image Credit: Stardew Valley Wiki The monster compendium is a book that gives a permanent power up to the reader in the form of a 3% chance for all monsters to drop double loot when killed. If an item that grants a similar effect is already present, such as burglar’s ring, the effects stack, increasing the chance even further. After reading the monster compendium for the first time, any further readings will instead grant 100 combat experience. The monster compendium also has a sell value of 2000 gold.

How to Obtain the Monster Compendium

Stardew Valley Combat Screenshot After killing ten monsters, the monster compendium enters the loot table of all monsters and has a 0.01% chance to drop. This chance then increases by 0.015% for each additional monster kill until a monster compendium is rolled. Once the first monster compendium has dropped, the chance for future monster compendiums becomes a permanent 0.5%. Come year three, players can alternatively attempt to purchase a monster compendium from the bookseller for 20000 gold. However, the chance for it to appear in stock is only 9%.

Monster compendiums are not exactly the most economically efficient gifts to give, but if a spare happens to be on hand, we have listed those who would like or love to have it instead. All characters not listed above have a neutral liking of the monster compendium, with the sole exception of Alex, who is the only character that dislikes it. Additionally, after reading the monster compendium at least once, two monster compendiums can be traded to the bookseller for one slime egg press and one slime incubator. The monster compendium is otherwise not associated with any bundles, quests, or trading and can safely be gifted or sold.
