How to Grow Cactus Flowers in Minecraft

Posted on by amber
Cactus flowers are now growing in a biome near you, but can they be grown at home too? Today, we answer that and more in “How to Grow Cactus Flowers in Minecraft.”

Finding Cacti

Minecraft Desert Biome Screenshot Before cactus flowers can be grown, one must first find a cactus and bring it home. Cacti generate naturally within desert and badlands biomes. It is also possible to find a potted cactus in the basement of igloos and cacti in the entrance chest of Trial Chambers. We personally recommend venturing out in search of a desert or badlands biome as, thankfully, neither is rare. However, should bad luck be encountered, the “/locate” command can be used to find desert biomes as well. This nifty tool provides the exact coordinates of the nearest structure or biome, and by clicking them, teleports the player there. The full command for desert biomes is as follows:
  • /locate biome minecraft:desert
Please note that using the locate biome command requires commands to be enabled in singeplayer and OP in multiplayer.

How to Grow Cactus Flowers

Minecraft Small Cactus & Cactus Flower Screenshot Once cacti have been found and gathered, place them onto sand in an open area back home. When a cactus attempts to grow to two or three blocks tall, there will be a 10% chance of it instead generating a cactus flower. If the cactus reaches its maximum height of three blocks without generating a cactus flower, one final 25% chance of a cactus flower growing will occur. Should the final attempt succeed, a cactus flower will grow as a fourth block on top, but if it fails, that cactus will never grow a cactus flower.

Farming Cactus Flowers

Minecraft Cactus Flower Farm Screenshot Cactus flowers follow the same rules as cactus when growing, meaning no blocks can be side by side with the areas where cactus flowers are attempting to appear. This leaves the best non-automated method for farming cactus flowers as simply filling an open area with cacti blocks in a chessboard-like pattern and waiting. An example of this compact but effective farm can be found in the image above. When the cacti eventually finish growing, odds are at least a few of those ten and twenty-five percent chances will have occurred. Finally, when harvesting, we recommend cutting down the cacti without cactus flowers first as harvested cactus flowers can still be destroyed by cacti. Doing so will help ensure your hard-earned cactus flowers survive.
