How to Tame Animals in Enshrouded

Posted on by cade-davie
With the arrival of the massive Enshrouded: Souls of the Frozen Frontier update, players now have access to a host of new features. One that players had long requested is to be able to tame animals and add them to farms. Here, we’ll tell you how to start rearing your own batch of fuzzy friends and what they can do for you in Enshrouded today!

Enshrouded Animal Taming Essentials

Before you run into the Embervale ready to befriend any woodland critter you can see, you’ll need a few things at your base. First and foremost, you’ll need Emily the Farmer and the services she provides. She’ll be your go-to source for all of your animal husbandry needs. From Emily, you’ll want to make sure you craft and set up both a feeder and a few animal pillows. Naturally, you’ll also want to fill your new feeder with the appropriate food for the animal you wish to tame. Keep in mind, you’ll also need to craft plenty of bait for the animal you wish to tame which is different from that animal’s required food source. Now, unfortunately, you won’t be able to zip straight to any animal and start taming. Emily the Farmer has a tutorial-like quest for you to learn the basics of animal taming. This quest, titled “Animal Farming,” will have you crafting the necessary bait and food to tame your first animals in Enshrouded, which will be goats.

How to Tame Animals in Enshrouded

Screenshot of a settlement in Enshrouded. Emily’s “Animal Farming” quest will walk you through the animal taming steps, but we’ve got some additional tips for you as well. As the game will explain, you’ll need to sneak up on animals you wish to tame and throw bait in front of or near them. When they’ve started eating, you’ll have to slowly creep up and pet them to fill up some heart icons that appear beneath the animal’s health bar. Fill up each heart, and presto! The animal will be yours to put into your inventory and take back to your base. That may all sound easy, but animals in the Embervale are skittish, so you’ll have to be extremely patient to succeed. If you see a ‘?’ icon above the animal you’re trying to tame, you’ll need to stop advancing, or they’ll be scared away. If they do run away, you’ll see a ‘!’ icon above them, and one of the hearts you’ve managed to fill up will become empty. A great way to make sure your prospective livestock don't dash away is to break line of sight with them if the ‘?’ icon appears. Once it’s gone and they’re happily munching on the bait you’ve thrown, you'll be free to move in and attempt to befriend them once more. Additionally, make sure nearby hostile mobs, such as wolves, are dealt with before you try to do any taming. They’ll spook or kill your target, which can be a tad inconvenient. As mentioned above, your “Animal Farming” quest with Emily will have you targeting goats first. Goats are easier to tame than other animals in Enshrouded, as you only need to fill up one heart for them. Other animals will require two or three hearts to be filled, so remember to bring plenty of bait and patience!

All Tameable Animals

Currently, there are eight different animals that you can tame in Enshrouded as part of the Souls of the Frozen Frontier update. These include:
  • Goats
  • Hophares
  • Fae Deer
  • Flightless Redtails
  • Frizzy Goats
  • Yaks
  • Cats
  • Dogs

Taming Cats & Dogs

Taming cats and dogs in Enshrouded is a bit different than taming other animals. Before you can find them in the wild, you need to complete a specific quest for each one. For cats, you’ll need to pick up the quest “Cat Search” from Balthazar the Alchemist. For dogs, you'll need to pick up the quest “Dog Search,” which comes from Althalan Skree the Hunter. Each quest is fairly straightforward, requiring you to craft bait, visit specific locations, and, ultimately, tame your first cat or dog. Unlike other animals you can tame, cats and dogs don’t provide resources once they’ve stayed at your base. However, they can give you a special boost when you pet them! For thirty minutes after petting your feline or canine pals, you’ll receive the Paw’s Touch buff, providing an additional +25 health.

Animal Farming Resources & Breeding

Eventually, they'll start producing resources for you if their needs are being met. If you have two animals of the same species, it's possible for them to produce some offspring. For that to happen, you'll need a bed for each parent and a third for the baby. Then, after a sufficient amount of in-game time has passed, a baby animal will appear on your farm. You can also upgrade your baby animals into adults for additional resources. After some in-game time has passed, you can expect the following items from your tamed animals:
  • Goat: Goat Milk
  • Hophare: Nothing
  • Fae Deer: Fae Deer Milk
  • Flightless Redtail: Egg
  • Frizzy Goat: Frizzy Goat Milk
  • Yak: Raw Wool
The Raw Wool from Yaks is particularly valuable. When combined with an Improved Spinning Wheel, you’ll be able to spin your Raw Wool into Wool for some Warm Padding, which will prove useful for surviving the harsh, colder regions of Embervale.
