Much like pigs in snapshot 25w02a, cows now have more variants on the way! So, today, we explore all Minecraft 1.21.5 cow variants, including where they spawn and how to get them in-game.

All Minecraft 1.21.5 Cow Variants

Cold Cow

• Biome: Old-Growth Pine Taiga, Old-Growth Spruce Taiga, Taiga, Snowy Taiga, Windswept Hills, Windswept Gravelly Hills, & Windswept Forest

Cold cows are covered by light brown fur, have forward-pointing dark horns, and spawn in old-growth pine taiga, old-growth spruce taiga, taiga, snowy taiga, windswept hills, windswept gravelly hills, and windswept forest biomes. While it is not confirmed, cold cows are likely inspired by the Scottish cow breed Highland Cattle which are covered by a natural light brown fluffy coat.

Warm Cow

• Biome: Savanna, Savanna Plateau, Windswept Savanna, Jungle, Sparse Jungle, Bamboo Jungle, Eroded Badlands, Wooded Badlands, & Badlands

Warm cows are covered by reddish-brown fur, have upward-pointing dark horns, and spawn in savanna, savanna plateau, windswept savanna, jungle, sparse jungle, bamboo jungle, eroded badlands, wooded badlands, and badlands biomes. While it is not confirmed, warm cows are likely inspired by the African cow breed Ankole, which can have reddish-brown coats and large upwards-pointing horns.

Temperate Cow

• Biome: Forest, Flower Forest, Birch Forest, Old-Growth Birch Forest, Dark Forest, & Swamp

Temperate cows are covered by dark brown fur with white blotches, have small dark horns, and are the classic Minecraft cow. As of Minecraft Snapshot 25w05a, they spawn in forest, flower forest, birch forest, old-growth birch forest, dark forest, and swamp biomes. The real-world equivalent of temperate cows is sadly pretty ambiguous, but some claim them to be the French cow breed Maine-Anjou due to their somewhat similar fur colors and patterns.

Red Mooshroom

• Biome: Mushroom Fields Biome (Mushroom Island)

Red mooshrooms are a cow variant exclusive to the rare Mushroom Fields biome that generates as an island covered by mycelium and giant mushrooms. Due to their more fantasy nature, these mushroom-covered red cows have no real-world counterpart but could have been inspired by fungi such as cordyceps.

Brown Mooshroom

• Biome: None

Brown mooshrooms are a cow variant that does not spawn naturally, even within Mushroom Fields biomes. Instead, brown mooshrooms are obtained by lightning striking a red mooshroom or very rarely when two red mooshrooms breed.
